What Land Back Means

Land Back is about returning lands and decision-making authority to Indigenous Nations — not a slogan, but governance, stewardship, and justice.

Land Back means restoring Indigenous jurisdiction over traditional territories. It includes land return, stewardship programs, Guardians initiatives, and IPCAs — not simply transferring property titles without governance.

Movements like W̱SÁNEĆ Lands Trust demonstrate concrete Land Back: acquiring territory for Nation-led stewardship. Pipeline and mining opposition on unceded land is also Land Back — asserting that Nations never surrendered authority.

Land Back is distinct from government land acknowledgements. It requires material change: consent, resource revenue sharing, and restoration of Indigenous law on the land.
