ProtectOnt.ca Expense disclosure · July 2026

Don’t trust the headline total

OLA expense disclosure is mostly travel and hospitality. Distance looks like waste until you split the categories. Discretion is where the story is.

Two archetypes. One bad habit.

Ranking MPPs by total dollars alone punishes northern and distant ridings and hides hospitality-heavy spenders closer to Queen’s Park. This brief splits the categories, shows House and caucus medians, then lets you look up your MPP.

1. Split travel from hospitality

These figures are claim categories — travel, accommodation, meals, hospitality — not full office or staff budgets. Across the House, hospitality is about three-fifths of disclosed dollars. That is the discretionary pile worth ranking.

Travel-heavy
Northern and distant ridings: large travel, modest hospitality. Expect this. Geography is not a scandal.
Examples
Sol Mamakwa (Kiiwetinoong), Greg Rickford (Kenora—Rainy River), Guy Bourgouin (Mushkegowuk—James Bay).
Hospitality-heavy
Totals driven by hospitality — often GTA / 905 — with travel a smaller share. This is the accountability hook.
Examples
Hardeep Singh Grewal, Sheref Sabawy, Zee Hamid, Aris Babikian, Rudy Cuzzetto, Paul Calandra, Caroline Mulroney.

2. Caucus medians are close — composition is not

Total medians by party sit in a similar band. The sharper signal is who concentrates spend in hospitality, not which caucus “spends more” overall.

3. Top hospitality (discretion)

Highest hospitality claims in the OLA window. Link through to the official disclosure page.

4. Top travel (distance)

Highest travel claims — read as geography first, gotcha second.
